Structural biology research has an excellent tradition in China. In the 1960s and 1970s, structural biology research in China once took the lead in the world, keeping pace with the United States and Britain. For example, the high-resolution insulin crystal structure measurement completed by the Beijing Insulin Research Group in the 1970s represented the advanced level of the world at that time. Since the new century, a group of domestic research institutions represented by Tsinghua University and the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have made outstanding achievements.
The High Precision Innovation Center for Structural Biology of Tsinghua University, organized by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, is one of the first 13 high precision innovation centers in Beijing. With Tsinghua University as the support and leading unit, the Center was jointly built with Beijing University of Technology. Tsinghua University is an important base for higher education, scientific research and technological development in China. It is responsible for cultivating high-level talents, achieving high-level scientific research achievements and promoting national economic construction. The structural biology team of Tsinghua University gathers, grows, expands and gradually demonstrates its international influence on the basis of the previous generation in this century's rare historical opportunity. The first director of the center is the world famous structural biologist Professor Shi Yigong. At present, there are 20 independent laboratories, more than 40 post doctors and more than 200 doctoral students. The research work covers many frontier fields of modern structural biology, including biological macromolecule machines, disease related membrane proteins, tumor suppressors Research on the structure and function of important biological macromolecules such as apoptosis regulating protein and diabetes drug target protein, and have made a series of work with international influence. In 2015, the Center published 11 high-level research papers in Nature, Science and Cell with Tsinghua University as the corresponding author, and dozens of papers in other international journals, which had a great international impact and contributed to the development of structural biology in China.
Relying on the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, integrating the advantages of Tsinghua University and Beijing University of Technology, the Advanced Innovation Center of Structural Biology provides an optimal carrier for structural biology and health industry.
