Early web pages like to add some sound files to improve the multimedia effect of web pages. At present, most web pages need to insert some audio players to select audio files and control audio files in order to achieve the audio playback effect.

In Dreamweaver, users can add sounds to web pages. The following describes the common audio file formats and each format in the Website Design Some advantages and disadvantages of.

. midi or. midformat

This format is used for instrumental music. Many browsers support MIDI files and do not require plug-ins. Although the sound quality of MIDI files is very good.

. wav format

These files have good sound quality. Many browsers support such format files and do not need plug-ins. WAV files can be recorded from CDs, tapes, microphones, etc. However, its large file size strictly limits the length of sound clips used on the web page.

. aif format

The AIF format is similar to the WAV format and has good sound quality. Most browsers can play it without plug-ins. Its disadvantages are the same as those of WAV format files.

. mp3 format

A compression format that can make sound files significantly smaller. Its sound quality is very good, and the file can be "streamed" so that the viewer can listen to the file without waiting for the whole file to be downloaded. However, its file size is larger than Real Audio. File, the viewer must download and install the auxiliary application or plug-in.

. ra,. ram,. rpm or Real Audio format

This format has a very high compression ratio, and the file size is smaller than MP3. All song files can be downloaded within a reasonable time. Because these files can be "streamed" on an ordinary Web server, the viewer can hear the sound before the files are completely downloaded. The viewer must download and install the RealPlayer auxiliary application or plug-in to play this file.

. qt,. qtm,. mov, or QuickTime formats

This format is an audio and video format developed by Apple Computer. However, special QuickTime drivers are required.

In addition to the more common formats listed above, there are many different audio and video file formats available on the Web.

Insert Video File

The following describes how to insert an audio file into a web page.

1. Link to audio file

Linking to audio files is a simple and effective way to add sounds to web pages. This method of integrating sound files allows the viewer to choose whether to listen to the file, and makes the file available to the widest range of listeners.

First select the text or image used as a link to the audio file, then click the folder icon next to the [Link] text box in the [Properties] panel to browse the audio file, or enter the path and name of the audio file in the [Link] text box, as shown in Figure 2-35.

2. Embed sound files

Embedded audio can integrate sound directly into the page, but the sound can be played only if the browser's computer has the appropriate plug-in for the selected sound file. If you want to use the sound as background music, or want to control the volume, the appearance of the player on the page, or the start and end points of the sound file, you can embed the file.

On the [Common] tab, click the [Media] drop-down button, select the [Plug in] option, and select the audio file to be inserted. The content of the plug-in will be displayed in the document window, as shown in Figure 2-36.
