On September 20, 1987, Professor Qian Tianzi sent out China's first e-mail, "Crossing the Great Wall, Leading to the World", which opened the prelude to the use of the Internet by Chinese people. China is the 71st country to connect to the Internet through an international special line Beijing website construction Although the development in China is slightly slow, it is developing very fast.

The development of the Internet in China can be roughly divided into three stages.

1. Research and test stage (1987-1993)

During this period, some scientific research departments and colleges and universities in China began to study Internet networking technology, and carried out scientific research projects and scientific and technological cooperation. At this stage, the network application is limited to a small range of e-mail services, and only a few colleges and research institutions provide e-mail services. Major landmark events at this stage include:

(1) In September 1987, CANET officially built China's first Internet e-mail node in the Beijing Institute of Computer Application Technology, and sent China's first e-mail on September 14: "Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner in the world", which opened the prelude to the use of the Internet by Chinese people.

(2) On November 28, 1990, Professor Qian Tianbai, on behalf of China, officially registered China's top-level domain name CN in SRI-NIC (Stanford Research Institute's Network Information Center). Since then, he has opened an international e-mail service using China's top-level domain name CN. Since then, China's network has its own identity.

(3) At the end of 1992, the NCFC (Zhongguancun Education and Scientific Research Demonstration Network) project of the National Planning Commission with the World Bank loan, namely the CAS network (CASNET, which connects more than 30 research institutes in Zhongguancun and the Sanlihe CAS department), Tsinghua University campus network (TUNET) and Peking University campus network (PUNET), was completed.

(4) On March 2, 1993, the 64K special line leased by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to the International Satellite Channel of AT&T Company and connected to the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) of the United States was officially opened.

2. Initial stage of development (1994-1996)

In April 1994, the education and scientific research demonstration network project in Zhongguancun District was introduced into the Internet to realize TCP/IP connection with the Internet, thus opening up a full function Internet service. Since then, China has been officially recognized as a country with Internet in the world. Later, the construction of four major Internet backbones, CHINANET, CERNET, CSTNET and CHINAGBNET, opened the process of laying China's information highway. As a result, the Internet began to enter the public life and has developed rapidly in China. The landmark events of this stage include:

(1) On April 20, 1994, NCFC opened a 64K international special line connecting to the Internet through Sprint Corporation of the United States, realizing a full function connection with the Internet. Since then, China has been officially recognized internationally as a country with a truly full-featured Internet. This event was rated as one of the top ten science and technology news in China in 1994 by the Chinese press, and was listed as one of China's major scientific and technological achievements in 1994 by the National Statistical Bulletin.

(2) On May 15, 1994, the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences set up the first web server in China and launched the first set of web pages in China. In addition to introducing China's high-tech development, there is also a column called "Tour in China".

(3) In April 1995, the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched the networking project for units outside Beijing (referred to as "100 networking projects"). On this basis, the network continues to expand, gradually becoming a national network for science and technology users, and is renamed "China Science and Technology Network (CSTNET)".

(4) In December 1995, the "China Education and Research Computer Network (CERNET) Demonstration Project" was completed, which was designed and built by China itself.

(5) In January 1996, the national backbone network of CHINANET was completed and officially opened, and the nationwide public computer network began to provide services.

(6) On September 6, 1996, China Jinqiao Information Network (CHINACBNET) officially opened its 256K special line to the United States and began to provide Internet services.

(7) In December 1996, China's public multimedia communication network (169 network) was launched in an all-round way, and Guangdong Telelink, Sichuan Tianfu Hotline and Shanghai Hotline were officially opened as the first batch of stations.

3. Rapid growth stage (since 1997)

After 1997, the number of Internet users in China has basically maintained the growth rate of doubling every six months. The number of online users has exceeded 100 million. According to the statistical report released by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), as of July 2005, the 16th Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet, China has about 45.6 million computers connected to the Internet, including 6.7 million dedicated computers, 20.7 million dial-up computers, and 103 million Internet users, including 29.7 million dedicated users, The number of dial-up users is 45.9 million.
