The future design of the website is to "eliminate the UI"

Source: Shangpin China | Type: website encyclopedia | Time: November 22, 2015
I have seen a saying before: "The final stage of UI development is to eliminate UI", and the article "No UI is the new UI" seen on Medium this week also explains this point again. In the past two years, various intelligent assistants have Marketing website construction Products emerge in endlessly. They no longer use the traditional UI as the main form of interaction, but only communicate with users through a simple dialogue interface, or even have no independent native app form, but are based on third-party platforms such as WeChat. With the continuous development of machine learning, artificial intelligence and speech recognition technology, the world like the one in the science fiction film "He" is no longer unreachable. In that world, even the simple message dialogue interface between human and computer no longer exists, but it is like two people communicating directly.

As a "user experience designer" (quoted because I feel that my knowledge reserve and design ability are not worthy of this title at this stage, but I hope to be worthy of it in the future), I felt a sense of panic after watching "He" for a while. It seems that in front of such emerging products that no longer have traditional UI, The position of designers has become dispensable. Although there is still some room to play, users will no longer care about the "good-looking" problem of products with few UI elements (of course, the current diversified cards still give a lot of room to play to UI design). The "easy to use" problem is also difficult to solve through traditional interface interaction improvement, The core of the experience lies in whether the user can accurately identify and predict the current scene and demands of the user and give ideal feedback. The designer will feel that "it seems that this is beyond my control".

When skilled software skills, rich interface design modes, cool dynamic effects, and accurate pixel eyes become irrelevant, what should be the development direction and core competitiveness of user experience designers in the future?

1、 Deep understanding and application of complete user experience design process

 User experience elements

In User Experience Elements, user experience related elements are divided into five levels: strategy, scope, structure, framework and performance. In fact, the work and thinking of some so-called "user experience designers" only stay on the surface. The strategic layer lacks a deep understanding of the product objectives and user needs, the scope layer fails to control the accumulation of features due to many errors and omissions in the communication of functional specifications and content needs, and the structural layer is dizzy and headache when facing the logic process of the more complex information architecture. All three levels are left to the control of the product manager, I only go to the design of polishing frame and presentation layer (yes, it is a true portrayal of me when I first started).

Disappeared interface! Future designers should improve their competitiveness from these four aspects

My alma mater, the Department of Industrial Design of Zhejiang University, will set up a course called User Experience and Innovative Design in my junior year. When I studied this course a few years ago, I was very confused about experience design. Why should I spend most of my energy to study the business model canvas, make user portraits, and really use online block diagrams to draw There is very little time in this stage of high fidelity prototype. It was not until recent years that I realized how important it is to understand the goals of business and users. In fact, the work of product design can be defined as finding a balance to meet multiple needs in the conflict between business, users and technology. "Balance" itself is one of the biggest difficulties in product design.

User interface design is just a small branch of user experience design on consumer electronic devices, and real user experience design, as a design thinking mode, can be applied to a much wider area than the small world on the screen.

2、 Behind the ToC interface experience

 Behind the ToC interface experience

Between ToB and ToC products, I think many people are more willing to choose to do ToC product interface design, to face consumers directly, to be the target user, to have a great sense of achievement after the successful launch of the product, to be convenient for outsiders to boast rather than spend a long time explaining what they are doing. But for some products, ToC's interface experience is just the tip of the iceberg, and does not touch the core experience pain points that users are willing to use and retain. There are too many apps with beautiful interface interaction but gradually dying. If the interface visual interaction of a taxi hailing app is better, how many people are willing to use it if they can't get a taxi quickly?

Although ToB products can't face consumers directly, and their interfaces look bland. Some products are destined to have no large usage scale from birth, but they can promote the improvement of consumer experience at the end. Although this can't be intuitively felt by consumer users at the first time through the form of interfaces.

For Taobao Tmall, the pain points of many consumer users are not that the interface is too ugly and it is inconvenient to find things, but that the supervision of fake goods is not effective, logistics is too slow, customer service is too troublesome, and feedback problems are not solved. Some people may think "Oh, it's OK Website Design But in fact, many ToB products in the company are dedicated to improving the experience in this area. Their direct users are mainly the company's waiters, business parties, merchants, etc., with more complex functions and information architecture. I am also focusing on the interaction design of these products, Although it cannot make consumers feel that "Oh, this interface has changed, and you are solving problems", it can improve the core product experience from a more fundamental perspective in the long run.

If you only look at ToC's user interface, sometimes you will find it very simple (how many elements does Uber's interface have). It seems that designers are not useful for companies with such products, but what about the world under the iceberg?

3、 Pay attention to technology, stay curious, and learn endlessly

Whether designers should understand technology is a commonplace topic. I think designers may not need to pay attention to specific technology implementation methods, but they should at least pay attention to the latest trend of technology development, which will drive the transformation of interaction design from the bottom, from desktop to handheld, to wearable, vehicle mounted, virtual reality, brain computer interaction, The design platform has been developing and changing. Many design trends change partly because technology and devices become more advanced. Can you imagine the consequences of using a lot of dynamic effects on early Android devices? The interface of Windows Vista was amazing at the beginning, but it was not bought by the market. Part of the reason was that the performance of many devices at that time was not enough to move the system smoothly, directly affecting the final use experience.

In the field of the Internet, it is hard for us to rely on existing knowledge to live forever. Only by keeping curiosity about new things and the motivation of learning and receiving new knowledge, can we successfully transform and retreat from the surging changes in the future.

Of course, if you have strong self-control and do not need one-on-one teaching from teachers, you can also take a look at this article: How to systematically learn front-end development with zero foundation

4、 Go out of the comfort zone and accept the trend of position integration

As the visual attractiveness of the interface itself weakens or even disappears and gives way to more important content presentation and interactive experience, the technical content of UI design itself decreases, the boundaries of interaction design, visual design, and product manager gradually blur, and the positions gradually integrate will be the general trend, In fact, many companies at home and abroad have already appeared the merged product - product designers. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for us, and also encourages us to take the initiative to go out of our comfort zone, although the process was very painful at the beginning (deep experience=.=). Many interaction designers actually hold concurrent posts as UX Writers (Google's UX team has this position, which is roughly equivalent to writing interface copywriting?). As for the conversational product form, if the copywriting is thoughtful and attractive, it will significantly improve the user experience. After watching "He", I also joked that if the world came in my lifetime, Let's change careers and write copywriting and dubbing.

When the tide of technological revolution comes and the product interface becomes weakened or even disappears, the truly qualified visual/interaction/experience designer will not be out of the game, but the specific title and scope of responsibility will change and merge.

The field of visual design is far broader than UI, and illustration, brand, plane, GUI, etc. belong to the category of visual design; Interaction design is also a concept that has actually existed for thousands of years. "Interaction design does not necessarily mean creating websites or applications, nor does it necessarily mean multimedia design or GUI design, and even its main focus is not necessarily advanced technology" (Interactive Design Meditation); The scope of experience design is broader. In addition to product design, it also includes the design of environment and services, involving a whole set of online and offline processes. What we need to worry about is that those "visual" designers who are quick to imitate, lack the design foundation and theoretical system of the system, have no in-depth understanding of the service design and user research methods, follow the design trend but do not understand the underlying reasons, and can only draw icons and interface in a standardized way The "interaction" designers who can only draw wireframes, set specifications and make dynamic effects, and those who think that they understand a little "vision" and a little "interaction", but do not understand the offline, service and environmental design process/importance, can call themselves "experience" designers.
