The Institute of Medical Experimental Animals of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences is a professional research institute engaged in the research and teaching of experimental zoology and comparative medicine, and the only research unit in China that integrates the creation, seed conservation, production and supply of experimental animal and disease animal model resources, comparative medical technology research, and experimental animal technology training, It is the undertaking unit of the national laboratory animal technology resource library for infectious diseases and new drug discovery research, and has the key laboratory of comparative medicine for human diseases of the National Health Commission, the third level laboratory of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the key laboratory of animal model research for new and recurrent infectious diseases in Beijing, and the Beijing Research Center for Engineering and Technology of Experimental Animal Model for Human Diseases, In 2015, the Human Disease Animal Model Resource Center of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences was established. The Institute has passed CNAS metrological certification, national laboratory accreditation and international AAALAC certification.

The facilities supporting human disease animal model resources are 16790 square meters in total, with systematic equipment for animal model development, phenotype analysis, quality testing, seed conservation, and reproduction supply. The existing human disease animal model resources include disease specific species resources, genetic engineering animals, genetic diversity animals, sterile animal resources, PDX resources and data resources, a total of 865 kinds, of which 456 kinds are preserved in vivo, and 550 kinds and 989 lines are frozen backup resources. There are 16 kinds of animal resources for specific human disease models, including ferrets, marmots, macaques, cynomolgus monkeys, marmosets, green monkeys, Brandt's voles, hairy mice, Bama mini pigs, tree shrews, etc.
Relying on its own conditions, the resource library can provide services such as genetic engineering animal model development, animal surgery model development, infectious disease model test, drug and vaccine safety evaluation, small animal imaging analysis, animal behavior analysis, laboratory animal microbial and environmental detection, laboratory animal pathological detection, animal model assisted reproduction and cryopreservation.
