The Linux Foundation also issued a white paper, hoping that open source code platforms such as the Linux operating system can operate with UEFI's "Secure Boot" function. Microsoft stipulates that computers with Windows 8 certification (Designed for Windows 8 label) must use UEFI interface instead of BIOS, and must use its Secure Boot function. This function can be used when the computer is turned on. In order to prevent Rootkit and other malicious software from controlling the computer, only certified software can be used to turn on the computer.

In fact, the Linux camp also agrees that Microsoft replaces BIOS with UEFI, because it can make the operating system more compatible with hardware, and perform better in hard disk, memory, power management and other aspects. Moreover, Secure Boot can indeed prevent users' devices from being kidnapped by malicious software. But the Linux camp is worried that ordinary users may be unable to install operating systems other than Windows under Microsoft's restrictions.

The Linux Foundation recommends that hardware manufacturers open the setting of Secure Boot, so that all Linux systems can be started under the Secure Boot mechanism, and use its security mechanism to support multi operating system boot. The foundation will establish an independent certification authority to enable multiple operating systems to obtain the credentials required for Secure Boot.

However, whether the system can operate depends on whether the hardware manufacturer supports it. The computer hardware must be able to allow the user to reset the certificate related to the Secure Boot function, otherwise when the Secure Boot function is enabled, the hardware can only use the default Microsoft operating system.

Microsoft originally set that only hardware manufacturers can set the operating system credentials for Secure Boot. The Linux group suggested that hardware device manufacturers should provide appropriate mechanisms to allow users to have greater control to change relevant settings. Microsoft demonstrated Windows 8 in Build 2011 in September, and sent it to developers through a tablet computer produced by Samsung, which can turn off the Secure Boot function. Microsoft also said in its blog at that time that users can control whether their computer devices enable the Secure Boot function, especially those who want to run the previous version of the operating system, but thought that turning off the Secure Boot function would be vulnerable to attacks.

The Linux community hopes that all Windows 8 systems should at least retain the option of turning on and off the Secure Boot function to facilitate users to install operating systems other than Windows 8. Windows 8 is expected to be launched in the second half of next year, supporting x86/x64 and ARM processors. At present, Microsoft has released a developer preview version.
