Network Experiment

In 1969, the National Defense Program established ARPANET as a military experimental network. The purpose of ARPANET design is to connect command and control systems distributed around the world with a network. In this way, when some computers in the network are damaged due to war and other special reasons, other parts of the network can still work normally. In fact, at the beginning of the establishment of ARPANET, only four hosts could talk to each other. Two years later, 19 nodes and 30 websites have been connected. Two years later, in 1973, the number of nodes on the ARPA network doubled to 40.

Just like Enik was ignored at the beginning, this unknown network did not attract much interest in a long time after the establishment of Apanet. However, as part of the army's reliable network communication experiment, ARPANET is closely connected with many universities in the United States that undertake military funded research projects. In order to obtain military project funds like other universities, more and more universities have joined ARPANET, which makes ARPANET very crowded and increasingly difficult to manage. Therefore, ARPANET is divided into two parts. The military network and the civilian based ARPANET are connected by a technical protocol called IP (Network Protocol). Because the network protocol is designed to allow thousands of networks to enter it, and stipulates that each computer in the network has the same ability as any other computer in principle, that is, any computer on the network can communicate with each other. Therefore, Arpanet has been greatly developed. In addition, a key idea of ARPANET is to use a new method to connect different LANs and WANs to form an Internet, which is the origin of the Internet.

Later, the National Science Foundation of the United States decided to use ARPANET to provide networked information services for scientific research institutions across the country. However, due to various technical and political reasons, the plan to use ARPANET did not succeed. Therefore, the National Science Foundation of the United States established its own NSF network in 1985. The NSF network is composed of a backbone network, an intermediate network and a campus network. In addition, a number of regional networks have been established to connect users in each region. By 1986, as many commercial departments had shifted from using Arpanet to using NSF, NSF replaced Arpanet as the backbone of the Internet. In 199 (), the US Department of Defense officially cancelled the Arpanet. So far, Aparnet has completed its historical mission after 20 years of operation.
