2. Basic principles of network interconnection

According to the working level of network interconnection equipment and the protocols it supports, the equipment between networks can be divided into repeaters, bridges, switches, routers and gateways, as shown in Figure 8-4.

(1) Repeater

The inter network equipment working in the physical layer is mainly the repeater, which is used to expand the length of network transmission and realize the electrical connection between two identical LAN segments. It merely copies the bit stream from one physical network segment to another, regardless of the network protocol (such as TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NETBIOS, etc.) used by the network. The interconnection protocol of the physical layer is the simplest, and the interconnection standards are mainly formulated by EIA, ITU-T, IEEE and other institutions.

(2) Switches and bridges (bridges)

The switch or bridge can connect two or more network segments. If the information is not sent to the network segment connected by the bridge, the bridge can filter it out to avoid the bottleneck of the network. (3) Router

The most common example is to connect a particular kind of LAN or WAN with a special network architecture.

3. Types of network interconnection

(1) LAN-IAN interconnection

It belongs to the relatively close IAN interconnection, such as the campus network (between buildings) and the interconnection between floors and ANs. Homogeneous network interconnection: refers to the interconnection of LAN with the same protocol. Common equipment include repeaters, hubs, switches, bridges, etc.

Heterogeneous network interconnection: refers to the interconnection of two LAN with different protocols. Commonly used devices include bridges, routers, etc.

(2) LAN WAN interconnection

The interconnection of LAN and WAN in a small area is mainly used to solve the network interconnection between several adjacent floors or buildings within a small test area, as well as within an organization, which expands the connection range of data communication and enables the LAN of different units or institutions to connect to a larger network system. (3) WAN WAN interconnection
